Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan inaugurated a conference on ‘Cooperative Federalism and Legal Reforms: National and State Perspectives’ at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, organised by the Law Commission of India. He stressed that India’s strength lies in its unity in diversity and that effective federalism requires cooperation between the Centre and states while respecting their constitutional responsibilities and autonomy. Highlighting the importance of legal reforms in achieving Viksit Bharat @2047, he cited the replacement of three colonial-era criminal laws and the repeal of more than 1,700 outdated laws over the past 12 years. He urged state law commissions to review obsolete legislation and recommend reforms to improve governance, transparency and ease of living. The Vice-President called for stronger coordination between the Law Commission of India, state law commissions and state law departments through consultations and the exchange of best practices. He emphasised that political differences should not obstruct cooperation in the public interest and expressed hope that the conference would produce practical recommendations for a modern, responsive and citizen-centred legal framework.
