Indian Envoy Meets Bangladesh PM Amid Hasina Row

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarik Rahman on Monday amid renewed diplomatic tensions following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s virtual address from New Delhi on August 5. The meeting came a day after Trivedi held talks with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. During her address, Hasina said she planned to return to Bangladesh in December to restore democracy, despite the risk of imprisonment or the death penalty. Dhaka strongly protested her remarks, saying the event could affect public sentiment and bilateral cooperation. Trivedi expressed optimism ahead of his meeting with Rahman, stressing that direct communication between the two countries’ leaders could help resolve differences. India has distanced itself from Hasina’s event, with MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal saying it was organised by a private media entity and that the government did not endorse its views.
