Air India Appoints Tewolde Gebremariam as CEO and Managing Director

Former Ethiopian Airlines chief to lead the airline as it enters a new phase of execution, expansion and global growth. Air India has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, marking a significant leadership transition for the airline. He will succeed Campbell Wilson, who resigned from the top position in April this year. Air India described the appointment as an important milestone in its transformation into a world-class, leading global airline. Welcoming the appointment, Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said Gebremariam’s track record of building one of the world’s most efficient and profitable airline groups made him uniquely suited to lead Air India. He highlighted Gebremariam’s operational expertise, commitment to safety and vision for hub development. Gebremariam said it was a privilege to lead Air India at such a historic stage and expressed his readiness to work with the chairman, board, employees, government and industry partners to deliver operational reliability, warm Indian hospitality and sustained long-term growth. The airline said the new leadership would focus on strengthening India’s position as a global aviation hub, improving international connectivity, enhancing passenger and employee experience, and maintaining high standards of aviation safety and regulatory compliance. The board also acknowledged Campbell Wilson’s contribution in guiding Air India through a crucial phase of its revival.
